Ponce police investigate shutter installation scam

PONCE INLET -- A dozen residents have been duped by a company that promised to install roll-away shutters on the outside of their homes but never did, police said, and now an investigator here wants to talk with anyone who may have done business with the firm's Orlando-based agent.

Ponce Inlet police Investigator Max Binz said he's investigating at least 12 cases of people who signed agreements for the shutters to be installed by Home Systems Inc. The contracts for the work were presented to customers by Robert Alexander of Orlando, Binz said.

"I've confirmed that eight of the 12 people gave money to Home Systems," Binz said Monday. "We're talking a total of about $60,000."

Binz said contracts for the shutters were all signed in 2006. In addition, he's working with police from other cities in the area whose residents also have reported having problems with Home Systems or Alexander.

State records show a Home Systems Inc. is located in Orlando, but there was no phone listing for the company there.

Binz asks anyone who has dealt with Home Systems or Alexander to call him at (386) 236-2168.
